Foreign students who wish to work in Taiwan (whether on or off campus) must first apply for and obtain a Work Permit according to regulations. Failure to apply for a work permit before working may result in a fine of NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 and an order to leave the country! The maximum working hours for foreign students is limited to 20 hours per week, with the exception of winter and summer vacations.

I. Online Application

Required Documents

  • Student ID Card

  • Passport

  • Alien Resident Certificate (ARC)

  • Proof of Enrollment showing registration for the current semester

  • Post office payment slip (for the application fee)

II. Important Notes

  1. Validity Period: The maximum work permit period is one year. Students must pay close attention to the expiry date to avoid penalties.

  2. Digital Permit: It is recommended to apply for the Electronic Work Permit so you can download it directly from the system.

    • Please note: You must complete the download within 7 days after the approval notice. The electronic work permit allows only one download attempt and cannot be downloaded repeatedly.

  3. Processing Time: After submitting the application, it takes approximately 7 to 10 working days for review. You will receive an email notification upon approval.

III. Other Relevant Regulations

  1. Working Hours: Foreign students, Overseas Chinese students, and students from Hong Kong/Macau who hold a work permit are restricted to a maximum of 20 working hours per week (excluding winter and summer vacations).

  2. Penalties: Failure to comply with the working hours regulation may result in the Ministry of Labor revoking the work permit according to the Employment Service Act. Furthermore, those who work without the required permit will be fined NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 and ordered to leave the country.

  3. Eligibility: According to the "Regulations on the Permission and Administration of the Employment of Foreign Workers":

    • Overseas Chinese students, Hong Kong/Macau students, and foreign students enrolled in a formal degree program can apply for a work permit immediately upon enrollment.

    • Foreign students coming to Taiwan to study language courses must have completed one year of study before submitting an application.

  4. Duration of Permit:

    • For applications submitted between October 1st of the fall semester and September 30th of the following year, the permit validity cannot exceed September 30th of the following year.

    • However, if a student provides a photocopy of their student ID card or proof of enrollment stamped by the Registration Section to show registration for the next fall semester, the work permit duration will not be limited to September 30th.

    • For foreign students studying language courses, the permit duration is based on the registration period of the current term.

    • The work permit loses its validity upon suspension, withdrawal, graduation, or the end of a language study/technical training phase.
