Foreign students who have been admitted to study in Taiwan must apply for a residence visa before entering Taiwan.
1. Things to note
• "Visa on arrival" cannot be extended or changed. Due to the visa on arrival, you must leave the country again and apply for other visas before you can apply for a residence permit. Please do not enter Taiwan in this way.
• Those who come to Taiwan with a visa to stay for the purpose of studying must apply to the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a replacement residence visa before the expiration of the period of stay.

The foreign residence permit is like the ID card of international students in Taiwan. It is the identity document for living in Taiwan. Therefore, it is very important for every international student. Please keep it properly and pay attention to your stay period at all times.
1. Application
Freshmen coming to Taiwan for the first time, students from overseas Chinese universities and graduate schools, and Chinese students transferring to Chinese language centers.
2. Extension
All students must apply for extension of residence permit within 30 days before the expiration date.
The extension method is as follows:
1. Extension to the International Cooperation Office
Bring your passport, residence permit, power of attorney and NT$1,000 (for foreigners) and NT$500 (for overseas students) to our office, and we will assist you in applying for an extension. After submitting the application, it will take about 7 to 10 working days for approval. For those who choose to have their certificate extended by the International Cooperation Office, the Office will notify them to pick up the new certificate after it receives it.
2. Online extension by yourself
Go to the Foreign and Overseas Students Online Application System to apply for an extension.

For the operation method, please refer to the operation video. After passing the review, you will receive an email notification. After completing the payment and printing the receipt, you can go to the Immigration Department to collect the new certificate.
3. Residence permit expired
If the extension of stay is not completed within the period of stay, the competent authority may revoke the person’s residence status and order him to leave the country.
If you are overdue within 30 days (excluding the 30th day) and are still in school, you can apply for extension and continue to stay after paying the fine and extension fee. If you are overdue for more than 30 days (including the 30th day) and are still in school, you must pay a fine, leave the country within 7 days, and reapply for a visa to return to Taiwan to study.
4. Fine provisions:
Overdue for 1-10 days: NT$2,000
Overdue for 11-30 days: NT$4,000
Overdue for 31-60 days: NT$6,000
Overdue for 61-90 days: NT$8,000
Overdue for more than 91 days: NT$10,000
5. Precautions
1. For those who apply to leave school (suspended, drop out, graduate) and hold a residence permit for the purpose of studying, the residence permit will become invalid after completing the school leaving procedures. Please leave the country within the time specified by the Immigration Department. If you want to return to Taiwan to resume your studies after your leave of absence, you must reapply for a visa to enter Taiwan.
2. If you plan to leave the country during your studies, please be sure to confirm before leaving that your foreign resident permit is still valid when you return to Taiwan. If necessary, please go to the online application system in advance to apply for the extension of your foreign residence permit.
